Consumer or Consumed?

so i'll say this first that like i'm actually planning on starting a public blog to document my uni life since it just started. don't worry though, i'll still update on this blog it's just that that blog is mostly uni stuff and this blog is like my life stuff. i'm trying to see if i can document each week of my uni life hahha ><

so yeah. it's supposed to be about the first week of uni but i just wanted to say a few things about being a smartphone consumer. on friday, my dad picked me up from expo after g12 and when we parked, i wanted to tell him stuff about school. like tell him how french spelling is so confusing cos you spell 10 letters but only pronounce 5. and i was basically trying to tell him about uni life la haha i mean yknow you share these stories w your family right? and like the ENTIRE time he was just on his phone playing a game. a game yknow not even like replying important messages or anything. and he was just giving those simple one word answers that CLEARLY shows you arent paying attention but you just wanna make it sound like you do. so of course i got a bit irritated la like hello your kid is here trying to talk to you and tell you about school life but there you are showing her that a game is more important than her life experiences????? lol ohkay maybe i'm just being a bit sensitive but idk leh like parents always complain that their children dont wanna tell them anything and now when i wanna tell you something you dont even bother listening? haha

it just got me thinking: are we the consumers of smartphones? or are we being consumed by our smartphones? do we use our smartphones just as a means of convenience or entertainment? so that it's easy for us to reply messages on the go, check maps, read, play games, etc.? or are we being consumed by our smartphones? such that once we don't have our phones we get anxious: omg what if i have to queue for a really long time and i get bored? do we value our smartphone games, IMs, and other functions more than we value time spent with people face to face? is there really a time we can spend with someone where our phones are forgotten until hours later? or is there that constant itch of "omg must insta-story this" or "omg i think my game the life full already" or "omg xxx message me on telegram better reply... OMG LOOK THEY PLAYING QUIZARIUM I MUST JOIN"?

sad to say that even i can't proudly proclaim that yes, human interactions > phones. but i'm trying to work on it. i'm trying to leave my phone aside and talk to others more. don't just always talk to each other for 5 minutes and spend the next 50 on your phones totally not interacting at all. i mean unless you're that close friends that like to sit next to each other and go through ig and show each other funny stuff hahaha. but yeah, your friends can leave someday, you may never get to talk to them face to face again. but if you leave your phone in the same spot, you'll be able to get back to it after hanging out with them. don't always use phones as an escape route when there's nothing to talk about. i know people aren't all extroverts who like to blabber but hey, this person's your friend; why not get to know them better? even if the friendships aren't lasting, at least talk a bit, find out about their life experiences and share yours too. rather than just having that weird awkward gap between you two and just using your phones, right?

sometimes i really ask myself: can i really go without my phone? am i really fine? will i freak out if i forget to bring my phone out and have nothing to entertain myself? i don't know honestly. but i don't want to be so attached to my phone anymore.

isn't it interesting how so many people complain that my generation are all 低头组s who value their phones over human interaction but yet i see so many people from the older generation practically inseparable from their phones? it's everywhere. middle-aged office goers with their earpieces in, watching a drama, the incessant texting of colleagues and the addictive playing of games. isn't it interesting how the criticisers are doing exactly what they criticise about?

please don't take it that i'm being hypocritical because i admit: i'm not perfect either. sometimes i prefer my phone over people. and sometimes in meals i look at my phone screen more than i look at the person sitting opposite me. but i'm trying to fix that. as much as possible i try not to touch my phone when i eat with others. i try to have conversations too. but when everyone is just on their phones, i guess i just succumb too. it's something that we ALL have to work on, i guess.

right. so after 20 mins of saying my peace i think it's finally time to start with school!

Monday

first day of uni!!! and i only have one lecture HAHA it was my nm1101e lecture! there was a lot of texting back and forth between friends from rag and friends from cnm camp on sitting together. and at first i was a bit conflicted as to who to sit with bc i didn't really wanna pangseh anybody? but in the end there was no need to worry lmao.

so i reached my first lecture ever a few minutes late because i couldnt find the lt HEH ^^;; and i was w kohdy and claire. initially we were gonna sit w abby but then when they saw abby sitting so far back in the lt they were like NOPE IMMA SIT IN FRONT so it was just me and abby then. all the other raggers were either sitting in like twos or with their other friends so i was a bit like HUHH then what's up w all that planning just now??? hahah

first thing i noticed in lecture was that the projector was only projecting one quarter of the lecturer's screen ._. i think he noticed it too but then he didn't care. i mean i know i have the slides too but uhhh i think i would prefer having something to look at when i'm typing my notes rather than just staring at an awkward screen? hahahaha. to make matters worse, my laptop was royally screwing up on me: first it cannot turn on for nuts. and once it can actually turn on, the touch pad and keyboard didn't work ._. good thing my laptop is touch screen so i typed w my onscreen keyboard. but can u imagine? the first 30mins of lecture was just me turning on and off my computer HAHAH

if i were to be very honest my first lecture was quite boring. maybe it's because of the whole projector thing? or my laptop being wonky? the topics discussed was really quite interesting though hahha. oh and the lecturer took a selfie at the start of lecture "because this is a communications and new media class" xD

then immediately after that i had to sort of rush off for driving bc guess who has to retake driving test and that test is on 29 aug and she hasn't driven for over a month???? lmao ded. the car i used was an old car so the clutch was quite difficult to handle ): the instructor was v good though! taught me all the little tips and tricks hehe. hopefully i can remember them ah ):

oh and also that day i didn't realise my portable had no battery so both my laptop and phone were dying before i even started lesson and i was like...... gg my class at ubi and my school is at kr. ;A;

Tuesday

tuesday was my first (and only HAHA) free day! i mean it was the last round of bidding already and i really really really wanted to take lak3201 so i had this plan to drop sw1101e, then take lak3201 but then still go for the sw lectures. i mean i did that and it felt ohkay for me but then like a bit sian lor that i cannot take sw ):

went for corporate prayer in the morning! and was really really thankful that chiang came over to my room to talk to me and chat and everything it was really really nice!! and she also helped me a lot with this whole module thing ah (:

oh and also i think i already posted about the module bidding drama so imma just leave this as it is cos the module bidding drama was basically my tuesday HAHA

Wednesday

wed was my most packed day. i had 3 classes back to back. which isn't as bad as others but i guess for someone who's been having the slackest days for the first two days of school it was a little intense hahah. so i had es in the morning and it was pretty nice? turned out that evan and i were in the same group and the teacher is really nice! she shared a lot of her experiences that were really meaningful so i'm thankful (: and then i had to freaking fly to french cos i think she let us off pretty late? AND I WENT TO THE WRONG PLACE FOR FRENCH ALSO so i burst into my class about 15 mins late??? was trying to board the bus but then it was way too crowded (as per usual) SO I BRISK WALKED FROM RV TO CLB THEN TOOK A BUS TO LT13 WHEN I ACTL ONLY NEEDED TO GO TO CLB OMG. but yes french was quite interesting but also really difficult? cos the teacher just starts out straight speaking in french so i guess it'll take a little getting used to ^^;; but ohkay la i would say, as far as learning a new language goes i think nus plans it really well such that it doesn't become too overwhelming for someone to learn the new language esp w 0 exp. i may be speaking too soon though HAHHA

then after that it was sw1101e! i would say that it was pretty interesting, i'd probs take it in sem 2 hahaha. got to meet kelly and izza and kam! and i had lunch which i dabao-ed from the dining hall ehhehe. feels great to not have to spend money on food LOL that day was a pretty shag day for me ah i would say. maybe bc of the three back to back lessons. thinking now whether do i still wanna sit in on sw lectures though... hahhah

Thursday

thursday was my first ever korean lesson!!! so i checked out the korean textbook and was trying to find it on carousell but guess what. max i only can find level 2 so BOBIAN had to buy it hahahha. it was a bit ex tbh but oh wells i guess all textbooks are ex ;A; i would say that korean was really interesting? idk i didn't really know anyone there and i think cos like everyone went up from the levels so they sort of knew each other or had a friend to come to class with and there i was sitting alone hahahha. it was nice though, really did get to learn. it's basic but yet i got to learn a lot esp in the form of grammar and speaking!! and also i realised that i just keep saying that every lesson was interesting HAHA

oh! i had wr too in the morning! i realised that apparently most teachers don't mind being called their first names although it seems really weird to me so imma stick to giving them a title maybe? hahah idk leh i just feel it's a bit too informal >< but yeah found out that stacy and sixian were in the other wr class that has the same timeslot but different sport ): sianz but at least i found friends in wr! met a girl who took 24MCs and i spent the whole day internally freaking out about it wondering what wouldve happened if i hadnt dropped sw and everything. so i even emailed the prof and everything but after the series of events the past few days of me emailing profs and the admins and everything (i think i talk to these people more than i do my friends HAHAHA) i realised that if i hadn't dropped sw i'd probably have caused a great slew of problems HAHA still trying to see if i can get the 24MCs though >< but i mean if i really don't get it despite me fighting for it then maybe it's just God telling me not to be so siao onz and just take things one step at a time hahhaha (anyway it's 22nd now and i can say that yeah, God is probs telling me to not be so crazy and take so many MCs HAHA cos i was thinking about it also, like with all the things i plan to join and stuff things might really get a bit too hectic for me? soooo hahha)

and thursday was also slf! the auntie in me rejoiced at the freebies HAHAHHA got val to help me get the freshman shirt and the notebook. so nice siaa to have helped me heheh >< i passed her my matric card in the morning before i went to take a second helping of breakfast (which i dabao-ed for lunch) and when i went to take the second helping i was so confused why my matric card (which is at the back of my phone) wasn't detected. when i went to take it out i realised it wasn't with me HAHAHA OOPS EMBARRASSING

but yes, lots of free stuff from slf!! there was this free makeup booth and i wanted to get the eyebrow pencils (it was through lucky draw) but i kept getting useless stuff instead ): and sppd to only go once but i was thinking maybe the person cannot recognise me so i went again AND SHE DID OOOPS she was like "eh didn't u take already" and in that moment i was like omg ded so i said "uhh i think that's my sister" HAHAHAHAHAH playing the twin tricks yo

really got so much freebies everything was soooo heavy and we all got so sian so like we just wanted to go back to rv asap haha

at night i went for g12! it was really nice and i'm glad i made it on time hehe. just that i had to leave early cos i had to go back to school since the next day still had lessons ><

Friday

supposedly my fridays start at 12 but that friday started at 10. why? because my fma clashed w french so i emailed the head to tell her that it will only clash on this one day and i asked for a makeup. and also i started my email w dear___ and she replied me bonjour lee xian AHAHHA

realised that lixin is in lpp too!! cool sia omg if i had taken that 10am class i would've been in the same class as her. but 10am classes that arent at rv are no go man HAHAHA

after that was fma!!! omg had to much trouble finding the seminar room used for fma cos it was in such a 鸟不生蛋的地方???? LMAO legit strutted into class a little bit late ): and omg i'm so thankful to have taken fma??? initially i was seriously doubting myself: like i had to go through so much trouble to take fma, was it really worth it? but now that i think about it i think it was really worth it ah cos fma is really so much fun??? like the teacher is so nice and the things we talk about are really so relatable and interesting!!! it might be a bit difficult to digest from time to time but then it's still really really nice ehhehe x) can you imagine i just went through one lesson of fma (it's called saving face, if i haven't mentioned this yet) and we were discussing in which scenarios do people give face, why is it considered giving face and all that and after that i found myself thinking so much about it when i met people. like STAHP LX IT'S ONLY BEEN ONE LESSON HAHAHA

and i also found out  that i'm exempted from both fas mods HAHAHHA apparently anyone in fass has to take 2 mods called fas1101 and fas1102. and i think people don't rly like it? (i heard 1101 had people had to write a 700 word essay even before the first lesson o mai). and i'm exempted from 1102 bc of my rv mod. initially i was wondering why i wasn't allocated 1101 bc at first before i was accepted into rv i was allocated 1102 and when i emailed them about it, they just removed it without giving me 1101 so i was like ????? it was only in my fma lesson that i realised this fma replaces 1101 HAHAHA

went for g12 again after that!!! managed to stay the whole duration this time wheeee and then when i wanted to go home, i missed the bus and the next bus was freaking 20 mins so i called and asked if daddy could pick me up heheh thanks dad :D

Saturday

if i were to be very honest my whole saturday was just g12. the only thing is that i went to g12 late cos i couldn't drag my lazy ass out of bed HAHAHAHHA >< and guess what. I MISSED THE BUS AGAIN. so instead of calling for daddy, i decided to just try out obike. and there was an obike rly nearby so i cycled from expo to home!!!! it was rly quite tiring but quite fun too!! just that the bike was a little difficult to handle and there was no basket at the front (unlike other obikes) so it was a bit difficult esp w my laptop bag. i hung it on one side so that made the bike severely imbalanced but bobian lor hahaha >< got off the bike each time i had to cross the road and met so many other cyclists that didnt. i bet they mustve thought i was such a noob but omg i aint gonna risk my life like that. esp when i cant cycle well and the bike is so imbalanced HAHAHA

oh! also after dinner break there was like a warming up segment where there would be a dance cam and everything. so mod dancers were asked to help be the first few people caught on dance cam so that others will feel less awkward dancing. so we initially planned a lot of things and everything but then when the actual one came up, THEY SKIPPED ONE OF THE GROUPS so my group was legitimately caught off guard when the camera panned onto us instead of the other group HAHHA and there was this SUPER enthu lady that was dancing omg damn cute. when the camera was at another group, she immediately jumped in to dance w them too AWWWWW EHHEHE

Sunday

Sunday was service! it was a combined service so i could see lots of kids all around hehehe x) and it was by Ps Abraham Ku! if i ever go taiwan i wanna go for one of his church's services sia it sounds really interesting hehe. and also he had a dance team OMG DAMN COOL THEY SUPER COOL SIA  we were supposed to meet them after service but then service ended too late and they had a flight to catch )))):

after that went for smtown audi again ahhaha it was a good experience. i need experience for my sch audis bc holy shit pls let me get into at least one dance cca HAHAHA

had a great game of league w eyjj too!!! it was the longest we ever played omg 1hr leh!!!!!!! it was also our first time taking charge of a game bc everyone else didn't really know what to do so it was a really interesting albeit tiring experience hehe x)

i was freaking rich by the end of my game lor HAHAH and also i was super defensive so i guess that's why i died the least (i mean just look at my items HAHA) i rmb before that there was a mission of killing 500 minions and i needed 135 more. so i was saying how aiya i can't hit 135 in one game one la. nvm we play one inter then one beginner then that completes the mission. then look where i was HAHAHHAHHA but twas cool :3

so yeah, that's my first week of school for ya! and rn i have a shit ton of homework to do so adios!

Hope™
