before you judge someone, walk a mile in their shoes
ohkay so cos there was detention today, i wore pe to sch and got caught for it and kena scolded. so all those that were wearing pe were called out of the hall to get scolded by the teacher. since he's a chinese teacher and chinese surnames are so ubiquitous, i'll just say his surname. he's mr. koh.
don't get my wrong, even though i've never been taught by him, he seems like a really really friendly and nice teacher, but knows when to be serious and can become scary when serious. but what annoyed me the most was his insensitivity and how unreasonable he was.
i usually don't get annoyed because who are you to stay on my mind for so long. but what he said really... it made me pity those students that aren't as lucky as i am and probably are constantly short of cash for their daily needs. you never know, cos a financially-challenged individual would not go around the school yelling that "I HAVE NO POCKET MONEY TODAY" "I HAVEN'T HAD POCKET MONEY IN A WHILE" "DAD'S STILL HAVING PROBLEMS AT WORK SO HE'S NOT EARNING ENOUGH". right??? humans are born prideful. we don't want people to know that we can't afford what most people can just because we're born in a family that's not as well-to-do as the majority.
so i don't mind if i was really the one at fault. like if i wore my pe cos i was too lazy to search for my uni. fine. scold. cos that's really their fault. but one girl said that it was because of the weather. it had been raining the past few days so her shirt couldn't dry. i think this is an acceptable reason????
cos if i could control the weather, i wouldn't be called lee xian. i would be called storm.
but what i felt was really really so insensitive and unreasonable was that mr. koh actually said "so? if it's not dry, there're means to dry it right? you have an iron, you can iron it. if not, you can buy a new one since you're still gonna need it anyway or you can always borrow from your neighbour. and if you're not on good terms with your neighbour, then you're the one at fault because you're not putting in the effort to befriend the people in your community! and if you think that the weather in Singapore is so unpredictable, then buy a dryer!"
ohkay there are so many things wrong in that sentence. i feel so vexed abt it not because he scolded us but because i feel indignant for those who can't afford such things.
firstly, the iron if it's spoilt. do you think we can get an iron on such short notice? what if we fucking suay that morning iron spoil how? what you want me to do? fly to us where the stores are open and get an iron??!?!??!
secondly, the neighbour thing. HOW THE FUCK IS IT MY FAULT. WHAT IF MY NEIGHBOUR IS SOME FIFTY-YEAR-OLD PEDOPHILE. WHAT. YOU WANT ME, A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL TO BEFRIEND SOME GUY THAT POSSIBLY WANTS TO FEEL ME UP?!?!??!?! ( i was gonna say boy too, but since i'm speaking in my context, i'm using girl. it applies to a boy too ) and what if i've already made efforts to have a good relationship with my neighbour but he/she's the one that's closing me out and avoiding me? you can't possibly say that i didn't try, right?
thirdly, about the dryer. WHAT YOU THINK EVERYONE IN SINGAPORE SO RICH TO BUY DRYER IZZIT. even if a dryer is not ex (idk how much it is la ohkay. i don't use dryer i traditional yo. dry in the sun got the nice nice smell), not everyone will want to buy it right? sg's hdb alr not that big. you plonk in one huge ass washing machine alr enough liao. now you wanna plonk in another dryer? fine, dryer hang up in mid air but i think those are so dangerous??? like next thing you know that whole thing comes crashing down on you. sorry, i really don't like suspended objects esp if their weight is prolly heavier than me or 3-quarters my weight. furthermore, like i said, not every family is so lucky to be able to afford such luxuries. i think i'm already so lucky to be able to have a huge computer monitor and a somewhat working computer (it's old la ohkay) and that kor and dad each have their own laptops. i have two huge ass tvs and like cable tv and so many things. and piano and abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. so many things that i'm blessed with that i can't name everything. some people aren't like that. some might live from hand to mouth because they have been born in that sort of situation. with globalisation, sometimes the poverty cycle can even affect those in developed countries. the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. then? what? blame them for being born into such a family background? blame them for something that they can't control?
i honestly feel that the third one is really.. too much way too much. even mummy felt the same. if you're so good why not you gift us a dryer? cos you seem like someone who's able to afford such luxuries to the extent that you take it that EVERYONE should have such a thing too?
i'm not judging you. but i just feel that you're trying to blame those less fortunate that do not have enough money for being born that way.
the next part will probably be really rude, but i want to say it: you're a maths teacher. use your brain for goodness' sake. i heard that mathematicians are mostly really logical? is it that hard to think for others? even if you're not logical at least have some empathy/sympathy and be able to realise that not everyone is so privileged to be able to afford such things can. not only financially challenged people ohkay. you see me i oso don't buy such stuff. why? sg's sun is a death ray. since we're in sg, why not make use of the sun, something NATURAL to dry our clothes, than use a dryer which uses ELECTRICITY to dry our clothes? save the Earth yo.
i'm sorry for starting of 24th May on a bad note ): thankfully it's not the 24th here now, but it is in Korea. imma blog about my babies' anniversaries soon~!
