VIXX Voodoo Analysis, that's not done by me lol

thinky thoughts about vixx’s voodoo mv

ok so there are at least 3 levels on which i think this mv can be interpreted:
1. vixx’s punishments are each suited to their own insecurities
2. vixx’s voodoo dolls each represent something about them
3. aspects of this video are revenge for/reflect aspects of the hyde video

on to the analysis omg image heavy + kind of disorganized under the cut (no pictures of the gross stuff except 1 of leo’s back from a distance!!)

1. punishments v. insecurities

n:

n’s got this mannequin head hanging in his room - note that it has ears, nose, and (space for) eyes, but no trace of a mouth whatsoever. might have something to do with how he talks so much but gets ignored/how the other members always say they want him to shut up?

leo:

given leo’s insecurities about being on camera, being in a room full of constantly switched-on tvs and what looks like a full lighting rig would probably be his own personal hell

ken:

this thing? tub thing? he gets confined to it. i thought maybe of his thing for small spaces, like when he eats cereal in the closet? maybe something to do with being trapped in a small space - turning what used to be sort of his refuge into his prison

ravi:

?????? something to do with his recent forays into lyric-writing, maybe - he doesn’t want to be formulaic? he’s afraid of being seen as dumb? he feels like he gets obscured by all this text (i.e. people see his raps + not himself)? it would be easy if his cage was just plastered with his sister’s face tbh

hongbin:

definitely about constantly being on display. even when he’s not actively in the display case, he’s got shards of glass stuck in his arms to remind him he’s always, always behind glass + being examined

hyuk:

especially with how the tree is taking over his skin, might be something about how he feels like he’s just scenery in vixx stuff kinda like in this mv shot - how he’s got nothing to do but stand there like a tree

2. dolls v. vixx

n:

we don’t ever get a good closeup of n’s doll, but from comparisons i think it might actually be the one that we see the girl attacking throughout the video to control everyone. if so, this would make sense - he’s leader, so his doll could be capable of influencing all the members

leo:

leo’s an observer, not a talker - his doll has two eyes but its mouth is stitched shut.

i’m going to skip ken for now and come back to him

ravi:

honestly ravi’s doll is pretty normal. is this because he doesn’t have a defining trait or because his insecurity is that in this crazy group he is (sort of) the normal one, and therefore not really special?

hongbin:

tough to see but i think it’s this one we get a closeup for without any real context. hongbin’s is probably the most mutilated of the dolls, missing a whole eye (the same one his hair covers, in fact) and arm plus with stuffing coming out. an insecurity about if he loses his “perfect” looks, maybe?

hyuk:

hyuk’s said his best feature is his eyes, right? guess what his doll is missing. also, its mouth is stitched closed - something to do with how few lines he gets? it might also be significant that hyuk’s doll has big obvious stitches on its arms where the wood is on his body. hongbin’s doll’s one good arm also has more obvious stitching (black, in his case) than n, leo, ken, or ravi’s.

told you i’d get back to ken:

i’m not sure what ken’s first doll says about him but what i think is moreinteresting is

partway through he switches to hongbin’s doll O: i think ken is the member who most obviously “puts a face on” for the camera so this might be the jaehwan/ken dichotomy

i also noticed that everyone who got stabbed in the choreo had heart imagery related to them/their dolls:

forehead

n and ken were both stabbed by someone else (each other, in fact - significant?), so their hearts are on their dolls

ravi, on the other hand, stabbed himself, so his heart is on himself.

leo’s doll also has a heart - something to do with how he’s the one who pulls the pin out of ravi?

hyuk’s doll has no heart.

now here’s the interesting part - hongbin’s doll has a stitch where its heart used to be. maybe this has something to do with the story between the girl and hongbin? (a little more on this coming up)

3. voodoo v. hyde

some of the punishments i mentioned above i could also see being analogous to certain things that happened in hyde.

hyuk becoming a tree, for example, could reference how he meets the girl in a forest scene (as does hongbin, but like i said i’ll get back to him)

leo’s punishment could also be seen as revenge for what he did to the girl in hyde - that is, attacked her from behind. in his punishment, he is not only always being watched, he always has his back turned to his observer, so that he never knows what might happen.

n is the only member who looks like he might actually be holding a conversation with the girl in hyde. his punishment of the mouthless mannequin head might be revenge for lies he told or some such.

hongbin, though, hongbin’s the real story here.

in hyde, he’s the one member who stays in the girl’s heart (…or something). his display punishment might have something to do with how he’s the one displayed on her chest.

in voodoo, though, he’s still the one she can’t let go. everyone else escapes, but hongbin gets dragged back, and she “turns” him. the stitch where his heart used to be might indicate that she literally steals his heart in revenge for him stealing hers.

interestingly, the only other member with “turned” eyes is ravi, who again also has unusual heart imagery compared to the others. significant?

other stuff i noticed but idk where it goes

lots of hands in n’s part - on the couch next to him, coming out of the piano(?). mannequin body in the front.

whose doll is this tho

(that’s hongbin’s room on the left). setup of the rooms looks like:

       ken   leo

   hongbin   n

idk what the symbols mean but hongbin’s (in the bottom right) might be the viking rune “mannaz” which according to wikipedia is “derived from the reconstructed common germanic word for ‘man’”, which, y’know, is fitting here. it’s also significant that the one who didn’t get away is the only one with a symbol that might actually mean something. ok thank you for sticking with me this is a lot of overanalysis but i think there’s maybe some worthwhile points here!!!!!

but one thing is that not only hongbin has the symbol.

N, Ken, Ravi and Hyuk have it too. i'm not sure about Leo, cos i don't see it in the pix, and i still don't want to watch the mv yet. sorry!! that and kor is studying so i dont think i'll be allowed to blast music lol

omg.... i can't believed she analysed it this much!!!! small things that go overlooked.... woah. really. that and she's really able to figure out where everything is haha. cos i definitely missed the heart on ravi and the many hands and stuff like that.

btw voodoo is only out for a day and it's 8th on the eyk kpop charts!!! xDDDD hopefully it'll get reviewed (((((: although i doubt simon and martina will talk about the mv like how this girl has said? i not sure. depends on how well they know VIXX o.o
